CHEMICAL PEEL AFTERCARE & RECOVERY
Patients generally do not experience pain during or immediately after their chemical peel treatment. However, there will be some increased sensitivity of the skin afterwards which can last for several days.
Chemical peels are a safe and effective skin-resurfacing treatment. After your consultation, our providers will help you determine if you are a candidate for treatment.
Chemical peel may cause temporary redness and irritation. However, the redness typically fades within a few hours or days. It is essential to follow aftercare instructions provided by a skincare professional to soothe and protect the skin after the peel.
There is a chance you will breakout post-chemical peel, as the process can trigger reactions that lead to breakouts. Breakouts vary in size, shape, and severity and can be a result of skin purging. Skin purging accelerates the skin’s natural shedding process, leading to the emergence of pre-existing impurities.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU GET A CHEMICAL PEEL?
How often you should get a chemical peel depends on the type of peel you are having done. For superficial or surface layer peels, you can repeat the treatment up to once a month. Deeper peels require additional healing time, and it is recommended to have them done only once every two to three years for optimal results and to allow the skin to fully recover.

CAN I USE RETINOL AFTER A CHEMICAL PEEL?
After a chemical peel, your skin will become sensitive and undergo a peeling process. Once the peeling is complete and your skin has healed, you can start incorporating retinol into your skincare routine. Retinol should be used as directed by the product instructions or as advised by your dermatologist.

Illuminize Peel®, the gentlest SkinMedica® Peel is appropriate for first-time, chemical-peel patients, patients with mild skin imperfections, or patients who are looking for brighter, more radiant skin with no downtime.
Illuminize Peel® is appropriate for all skin types.
Any procedures and products that may increase skin sensitivity should be avoided before your Illuminize Peel® treatment. Ask your physician or skin care specialist for details.
With Illuminize Peel®, patients should not expect to see visible peeling due to the superficial nature of this peel. There is no expected downtime with Illuminize Peel®.
Most patients leave the office looking healthy and fresh. Mild redness or discoloration may occur, but it can be covered with makeup. Ask your physician or skin care specialist for details.
Since new skin is more susceptible to sunburn, extra precautions should be taken to limit sun exposure for at least one week after the peel. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen product with an SPF 30 or higher is recommended.
For maximum results, the Illuminize Peel® can be received every two weeks until the desired results are achieved. Results are cumulative and optimal benefits are seen with a series of three or more peels.
Your post-peel care should include SkinMedica® Sensitive Skin Cleanser or Facial Cleanser, moisturizer appropriate for your skin type, and Essential Defense Mineral Shield sunscreens (tinted or untinted). Four to five days after the Illuminize Peel® you can resume the use of your regular treatment products. Ask your physician or skin care specialist for additional details.

Rejuvenize Peel™ is appropriate for all skin types.
The complete treatment is expected to take 45 minutes, which includes ample time to address any questions you may have and discuss your post-peel care. The actual application procedure is approximately 20 minutes. Tolerance to the procedure varies from patient to patient. Tingling or burning sensations are normal and expected reactions. A handheld fan can minimize discomfort during the procedure, which usually subsides in a few minutes.
Rejuvenize Peel™ can leave a yellowish tinge on the skin, which lasts no longer than 2-3 hours. Mild redness is expected after any type of chemical peel procedure. The extent of redness varies from patient to patient. The face may appear redder than usual for some time after the treatment and completely resolves once the peeling is complete.
The degree of peeling may vary depending on the individual’s skin condition and degree of the damage. Peeling can range from mild flaking to peeling in sheets.
